• Groundwork

Laying the foundations for success is critical to developing a stable core and a steady structure for independent living. In Groundwork, participants develop relationships with thier peers and program staff while working to familiarize themselves with their new home and the Burlington area. Developing a routine and setting initial goals enable participants to adjust to life at Arete. Groundwork is about getting ones feet under them in their new setting and preparing for the work ahead.

  • Discovery

In Discovery, participants work to gain a more complete understanding of themselves through assessments, exploration, and practicing independent living skills. Participants work with staff to identify inherent strengths, while noting and addressing areas where additional support is needed. Discovery presents an opportunity to define values and goals and to create a plan to move confidently through life.

  • Development

With the support of the transition team and using the knowledge and skills acquired in Discovery and Groundwork, participants put plans into action. During development, participants wrestle with real world challenges as they arise in real time, practicing skills and building resilience. Development is an opportunity to engage with academics and workplaces and build broader social networks. It is a time to build the tools necessary to be more effective in academics, work and social environments.

  • Mastery

In Mastery lies an opportunity for participants to demonstrate newfound capacities while living broadly independently yet within arms-reach of program support. Participants’ commitments to personal pursuits–academics, work and social–come to the fore of their experience. Arete staff provide necessary support while helping participants take the final steps in living independently and planning for their graduation from Arete. More skilled, confident, and motivated than before, participants are ready to engage in the life they have imagined for themselves.
