What to Expect

Family support is critical to participant’s success in the program.

Transition to independent living is a process. Time and space are needed to learn, practice, and implement new skills. There is a balance between support and autonomy, facing challenges head-on and paving the way for someone. Arete helps to define that balance for each participant at each point in time. Participants get the encouragement and support when needed, but the work is theirs to do for themselves.

It’s important to give them the time they need to adapt and apply these new skills to their lives. Progress isn’t always linear. Just like learning and adapting any new skill, there are inevitable successes, challenges, and setbacks. Each of these experiences is what leads to real growth. Participants at Arete Transitions are given a safe and structured environment in which they are able to “fail forward” and learn from challenges and setbacks.

As family members, our ask is that you support the participant and the process. While it may sometimes appear that your young adult has taken a step backwards, that is part of the process. Sometimes we have to take a step back in order to launch ourselves forward, and participants need to feel supported in that process.

We are here to support the participants in launching their independent lives with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation, but acknowledge that this process poses new challenges for the family, too. To that end Arete provides comprehensive family support and integration to help you best understand the challenges your family is facing.
